5 Reasons Why You Need a Month-To-Month Lease Apartment When Moving To LA
by Anna Sota
LA is an exciting place, but it's also expensive. If you're looking for a more affordable way to live in LA, then a month-to-month lease apartment might be the right option for you. What are some of the benefits of living in an apartment with this type of lease? Here are five reasons why you should rent month-to-month when moving to LA.

A lot of people make the mistake of signing a one-year lease right away. Let me explain why it's a big issue if you are not familiar with the city.
1. Save money on rent
There are many perks to living in an apartment with a month-to-month lease, including being able to save some serious money when it comes to your rent. When signing a one-year lease, usually you have to pay not for one but for two or three months. It makes it harder, especially when you have just found a job or still looking for one. With a month-to-month lease, you only pay rent on the unit you're staying in.
Another issue is that you can change jobs, and you will have no money to pay for a long-term lease. Make sure that you like your job and co-workers before commiting.
2. Flexibility on lease terms
Before you start to look for an apartment in LA, you need to know what you can expect on the price. As an example, I currently rent an apartment in the city of Santa Monica. I live in it year-round, because it was the only affordable option, but I can usually move out by March 1st. There are, however, many apartments available to rent that don't have a year-long lease, like the one that I'm currently living in. They can be a bit pricier than the one I'm in, but still very affordable.
Why a monthly lease works for my situation is that it lets me change the length of my lease.
3. Safety
Is priority #1. The situation in LA is changing, and it's important to stave in a safe neighborhood. You can find a lot of information online, but it's different even a few blocks away. So month-to-month lease will give you that option to try and see in your own eyes how safe is your new neighborhood.
4. You can stay in a location until you find an apartment that meets your needs
It might take you a while to find the perfect spot. You might not be willing to commit to a year in a place without having a full commitment. However, with a month-to-month lease, you can stay in a location as long as you need. This could mean staying in a long-term sublet situation that might not have the right room for your things or going into an apartment that might not have all the amenities you need.
For example, you can try co-living. It is a great way to save money as places like Sota co-living have month-to-month leases. In the meantime, you can meet new people, save money, and move closer to your dream.
5. Choose where you want to live
The best thing about the month-to-month lease option is that you can choose exactly where you want to live. To the west, you can find some of the nicest beaches in the world, while to the east lies San Diego and Los Angeles County. This means that if you prefer the beaches of the west and don't mind driving three hours to get to the ocean, then you might want to go there for a month or two. If you want to move to the mountains, then you can always choose to live up high in the Santa Monica Mountains and commute by car instead of having to drive into LA every day. There are also areas of the city where it's easy to take public transportation in and out, which means that you can take buses or subways to work each day and not have to worry about parking a car all day.
Make sure that you like the area before signing a long-term lease.
